Review of Man on the Moon (1999) by Amber O — 05 Mar 2009
Jim Carrey plays the late comedian Andy Kaufman. Carrey's performance is flawless on stage. But when he plays Kaufman off stage he makes him look too weird.
Jerry Lawyler who plays himself in the movie was knocking the movie for weeks on WWE Raw after seeing it. I remember him saying that Andy was a nice guy and that Carrey portrayed him to be a total nut. I agree with that. While the movie even tries to get us to question whether or not he was so innovative that he faked his own death. We're supposed to think that he just might be the Tony Clifton on stage in the end.
Despite all that, I still think it's a decent movie due to Carrey. Despite Courtney Love being one of the most hated women on the planet, she was actually a really good actress. She plays Kaufman's girlfriend. Paul Giamatti in one of his earlier roles is also effective as Kaufman's best friend.
