Good actors can play characters and make them believable. Great actors can play real people and make them convincing. I don't know how this metamorphosis of acting takes place. All I know is that when this happens something transcendent occurs between the audience and the film.
Kaufman was an extraordinary showman and performer and Jim Carrey portrays him in a performance which I don't think he could ever repeat. As much as I like the Truman Show, this may be Jim Carrey's highest achievement. I haven't decided yet.
