Review of Man on the Moon (1999) by Matt R — 04 Oct 2010
Milos Forman does to Jim Carrey in 'Man on the Moon' what he did to Jack Nicholson in 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest'. He took excellent actors and stretched them beyond themselves and what came out on the other side is timeless.
'Man on the Moon' is the true story of Andy Kaufman, one of the most obscure "song and dance" men this world has ever known. Carrey does such a good job portraying him, you can almost say that Carrry is a better Kaufman than Kaufman himself.
It costars Danny Devito, Paul Giamatti, and Courtney Love. This is one those kinds of roles that Carrey keeps doing that helps him stand out as a master of the trade where some of his earlier "potty humor" type movies maybe didn't show that.
His work on 'Man on the Moon', 'The Truman Show', 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind', and 'The Number 23' definitely let people know that he is more than a Mask, or a Dummy, or a Pet Detective.
He crossed genres when others like him have failed (Adam Sandler). 'Man on the Moon' is a funny film, but the performance that Carrey gives is moving and truly is Jim at the top of his game.
