Review of Man on the Moon (1999) by Dionisis K — 05 Apr 2012
Stating from the start that this biopic plays fast and loose with reality was a nice touch to the audience, and one I applaud. You get a sense of the man and more than that a sense of what he did that was of note.
Being British I was only ever exposed to his work in Taxi. The movie takes pains to recreate the ambiguity of Kaufman's performances and artistic mind in a loving fashion. Relentlessly positive the movie sadly avoids aspects of his relationships or personal life in anything other than the guise of a performance.
Even if you detest Carey as an actor you can still enjoy an earnest and reverent portrait of an earnest and decidedly irreverent man.
