Review of Man on the Moon (1999) by Felipe D — 18 May 2012
After having listened to a recent Bob Zmuda interview, I was drawn to watching this film. What I noticed after having heard many of the stories and subsequently watching whatever related clip I could find on YouTube, was how weirdly lack lustre some of the scenes in the film played out.
In fact, the first thing I noticed was how quickly the film went from one piece to the next, for a biopic, it was weird to have known of the usual filler backstory. It was as if this was Andy Kaufman's life in fast forward.
To a degree I was thankful that we didnt get a laboured "early life" backstory but then once we got in to the meaty stuff it just seemed to fly by. Additionally, once I remembered Courtney Love was in this, I was pleased to see her role is reasonably small.
On the plus side Carrey performed admirably and really delivered as Kaufman, with extremely solid performances from DeVito and Giamatti. Knowing a little of the Kaufman story I think they did justice to his story.
