Review of Man on Fire (2004) by Philip S — 14 Aug 2011
I had heard surprisingly good things about this one, so I caught it on tv. I see it's sitting at 39% on RT and I can see why. It's not a bad film, but it's a very straightforward action yarn.
It's a bit like Book of Eli that way, and is quickly becoming Denzel's signature film genre. Lots of bad guys to kill and a single purpose. Even the endings are becoming similar (see Deja Vu, as well).
There's a pretty strong cast here, including Christopher Walken, Mickey Rourke, Giancarlo Giannini, Rachel Ticotin and a not totally out of place Marc Anthony. With Scott's direction, it's a watchable film, but the story just becomes way too one-dimensional.
Not exactly a flattering portrait of Mexico, either. A lazy Sunday film, but don't cry if you never see it.
