Denzel Washington gives a riveting performance as John Creasy, who used to work counter intelligence for the CIA and then became a mercenary. Fed up with the violence and amorality of the world around him, Creasy heads to Mexico in order to be the bodyguard for Lupita or Pita, who's played by the adorable Dakota Fanning.
When Pita gets kidnapped, Creasy seeks his revenge in spades. Denzel is so good as Creasy that one nearly forgives the standard revenge plot concocted by screenwriter Brian Helgeland. Unfortunately, director Tony Scott's self-indulgent stylistics are so over-the-top that it undercuts any possible emotional connection to the proceedings.
A frustrating misfire...
