Review of Man of the Year (2006) by Kyle S — 21 Oct 2009
Quite a unique film to say the least. Major problems stem from what this movie wants to be. The comedy elements are very strong. When Walken. Williams, and Black are on screen together it's 5-star stuff.
However everything else is weak and uninspired. I have to say Laura Linney delivers one of the worst performances I've ever seen in film. It's just not believable, it's merely annoying and trite.
How this passed onto the theatrical cut is beyond me. Every scene with her is loathsome, dragging down the movie every chance she has. Jeez. It's too bad we couldn't have more time with Jeff Goldblum, who delivers a great fast talking performance.
This is different. It wanted to be a thriller almost. The bits that try just don't work and half the film falls apart. The director should've taken the advice of Christopher Walken's character.
Stick to the funny stuff.
