Review of Man of the Year (2006) by Lillian J — 12 Apr 2012
Being someone who is not a fan of Robin Williams, when I see a film with him in it, I proceed with caution. With Man of the Year I was relieved that he at least tried to restrain himself, and is featured in a fairly appropriate role.
The movie is part drama, part action, part satire, and part romantic comedy. This mix didn't exactly sit well throughout the film, and at times it was easy to loose sight of the point. Some of the acting performances, however, helped this movie out though.
Walken was pretty solid, and so was Laura Linney. Those fortunately overshadowed any damage that Jeff Goldblum was able to inflict. What was unfortunate about this one though, is that all of that which I have forementioned overshadowed some of the more interesting points of the movie.
The movie could have made some more meaningful statements about American Politics, only it kept shifting gears and inferring, with defeatist type behavior and dialog that change is impossible (which perhaps it is, but why dress it up?).
The movie wasn't bad, but it wasn't as good as it could have and probably should have been.
