Review of Man of the West (1958) by Sarah F — 15 May 2009
I can't think of any Anthony Mann movie I didn't like. There must be one out there but this isn't one, even if its not in the same caliber as Winchester '73 or The Naked Spur. Coop is a little old for this role but I think they make it work and Lee J.
Cobb is just always fun on screen. Still, its really Mann's touch that raises this Western above so many others. I think Mann's Western's being so personal, maybe as a result form all is earlier Noirs, keeps his work fresh and relevant, I'd even argue more so then John Ford.
