Review of Man of Tai Chi (2013) by Philip H — 09 Sep 2013
I'm a tiny bit biased towards Keanu, and I feel like most people are reviewing Keanu as a person rather than the effort he put into the film. He's heavily involved with martial arts and it appears as though people have missed the point of this film entirely, which is really annoying because of all the people slandering it. Keanu's character is stiff and blocky, as some people are. Even his fighting style is, but it's shown clearly how solid and dangerous he is, he doesn't need to move perfectly and his limbs hover around with purity and grace, fuck you, he can do what he wants with a character he created.
Fight scenes are perfect. The story was perfect. bits of it went on only as long as they needed to to get you back to more fight scenes. SO much was flying around this film as Keanu's character coaxed this "humble man of tai chi" into becoming a cold blooded killer, completely defiling the martial art he devoted his life to, and dishonouring the man who took only him on as a pupil, and clearly loved him like a son.
This film is so so much deeper than just "Keanu was rigid and the story was boring" the story was martial arts and nothing more. EVEN LOOK AT THE IMAGE! Keanu in black and Tiger in white, Yin and Yang! that's what it's all about! if you didn't like it I implore you to watch it again! It's an incredible work and straight into my favourites.
