Review of Man of Tai Chi (2013) by Joshua K — 15 Dec 2013
The fights were terrific, with what appears to be minimal wirework at first look. This was a really good mashup of old school kung fu with new school crime drama. Entertaining at the very least. The character story lines could use a little work however. The main character is the most in-depth watching him go from modest delivery guy in Tai Chi training to a powerful, dark force in a short amount of time. It was quite good I thought. The other characters were lacking. His master had a great history that was only eluded to in conversation. The bad guy (Reeves) is disappointingly shallow. He's on some elusive quest to find.... a guy that can kill another guy? I'm not really sure what his whole story was, other than he was a successful man with a security company that runs a televised fight club in his free time, and is generally moody. Not sure what his cause was. The girl, pretty much just a girl, not a lot of dept. The cop girl, a cop bent on a hunch.
Overall, entertaining. Only really disappointed with them not elaborating on Reeves' character more.
