Review of Man of Steel (2013) by Kevin R — 02 Dec 2016

Man of Steel is a mediocre superhero film and mediocre film in general. It is a mediocre snooze-fest. It is incredibly boring and slow. The story is average and generic. There is too much nonstop action. General Zod was over-the-top and an overacted villain. Michael Shannon overacted the role of General Zod. His performance was over-the-top. Laurence Fishburne was miscast as Perry White. Amy Adams was miscast as Lois Lane. Clark and Lois had no chemistry. The lack of chemistry between those two iconic characters was so underwhelming. Henry Cavill and Amy Adams' chemistry was nonexistent. The movie had too many flashbacks and was way too overly melodramatic. Superman is supposed to be this light, bright, colorful, joyful, and fun superhero... But in this movie he is the exact opposite. Superman in this movie is a dark, gloomy, boring, emo, and depressing superhero. Superman even accidentally caused a ton of destruction in this movie during fights and action sequences. Superman is not supposed to be clumsy. He literally caused more destruction than the Hulk ever did in the Hulk movies. Not the Superman I grew up with. Not my Superman. The movie was also too humorless and took itself too seriously and lacked fun. Superman barely smiled in this movie. The end of the final battle in the third act was bad because Superman killed General Zod by snapping his neck. I know he only did that because he didn't want Zod to kill those innocent civilians in the subway with his heat vision, but it was so poorly executed and ruins the character of Superman. He should've flown Zod up in the air out of the subway station while he was grabbing him and then beat him unconscious. Superman is not supposed to be a killer. Seriously, what was Zack Snyder thinking? That would have been a far better ending to the final act. I fell asleep a bunch of times during this movie because of how boring it is. Overall, Man of Steel is a long, boring, sleep-inducing, average, overly melodramatic superhero film.
