Review of Man of Steel (2013) by Alex G — 02 Apr 2016

It took me about an hour to figure out why I was so completely uninterested and bored by this movie. I thought the writing was fine, the actors did their job, and the directing was surprisingly decent. What it comes down to is that the entire film was one-note and bland. No character exerted any depth. We were told how they felt and what they meant to the moment, but never actually saw the heart. Speaking of that, the death tornado scene is one of the most forced hallmark deaths I have ever seen in a film. The Jesus stuff felt so one-the-nose and unnecessary that it distracted from every scene it was shoved into. The story itself was about as convoluted as could be with fake science mumbo jumbo and it did the one thing I hate the most...it tried to act like their were stakes to the movie by killing an endless amount of people, yet any character given more than one line of dialogue avoids any and al harm, thus alleviating the stakes and any investment I could have with the situation.Besides that, the film is in dire need of an editor. I feel like this film could be vastly improved by a good editor, trimming away about 90 minutes that added nothing.

So why three stars? It was a good enough story with moments that worked. It never made any truly bad choices or became a "bad film." I think Troy put it best...it had no heart. Still, some great moments.
