Review of Man of Steel (2013) by Official C — 08 Feb 2016
What are all these professional critics smoking? It's as if they saw a different film. Yes, there was an AWFUL lot of action & destruction. That's what SHOULD happen when GODS fight. It shouldn't be a manhole-cover tossed here, and a Coke billboard smashed there; it should be cataclysmic.
It should be fast and thunderous and apocalyptic. And this is the first Superman film to deliver that. Yes, Superman was melancholy. That's the appropriate emotion for an alien who's all alone and surrounded by a world that would love to dissect him if it got the chance.
Again, this is the first Superman film to deliver that. Emptiness? No soul? Please. There was more soul in that last look between Clark and Jonathan alone than there was in any of the previous Superman films.
.. and that painful cry from Cavill at the end (when Superman let himself realize the magnitude of what he'd just done) had at least as much depth as Reeve's despair at the end of the original.
Not enough romance? Maybe that's because Superman was busy SAVING THE WORLD and Lois Lane was busy doing her job for once (this was the very first Lois Lane that actually seemed like an authentic, professional, Pulitzer Prize winning journalist instead of just a love interest or a damsel in distress).
