Review of Man of Steel (2013) by Roger P — 20 Mar 2016
A brilliant reinvention of the Superman myth that brings the character into a fictional space that more resembles our real world, and asks 'what would this all look like if such a being actually existed?' Given the subject matter it should be no surprise that it is very much a science fiction tale.
It is a radical departure from the cultural psyche and mythos that surrounds the character from 1939 - mid 60s, and can even be read as Superman symbolizing America's ideals about itself; and the film examines and updates that for a postmodern world.
MoS will soon come to be properly understood as a worldbuilding film within a trilogy of three films: MoS, BvS, and JL 1. This film may have a few warts but overall it is a masterpiece within the CBM genre.
