Review of Man of Steel (2013) by Maymay A — 27 Mar 2016

Man of Steel is a great opener for the DCU. I thought this movie was great. It was entertaining, fun, great action, and had a great Superman with an overall interesting story and villain. This is the best Superman film since the first with Christopher Reaves.

Its really great to see some awesome action with Superman because we haven't seen that for a while. Its a story we've scene dozens of times with minor twists but it was what it needed to be and that was a good entertaining action packed superman film that introduces us to the DCU.

The score for this movie is absolutely amazing. The movie expands on a lot of things such as us as the viewer getting more knowledge about how kryptonian society works and what the overall planet looks like as well as a look at some of the creatures that live on the planet which was fantastic to see and a great opener for the movie.

I enjoyed the religious imagery that they painted with Super-mans character because in real life that same thing would happen where people see him as some kind of deity. I enjoyed the way they had us see into Clarks past without having the entire first half of the film be him during his childhood up to adult hood and flash backs was a neat way of showing it.

The film is a darker twist on the Superman story which isn't a bad thing and a refreshing take on it instead of having everything be boy-scoutish like it normally is. The film had its emotional moments where it needed to be and overall had an interesting retelling of the iconic Superman story.

Solid performances as well as pretty good pacing and entertaining action with a solid story. The only gripes I can think of is that they could have toned down some of the action scenes a bit because a lot of unnecessary things were destroyed and about 95% of it was Zod and his World Engines as well as his kryptonian lackeys but the other 5% was superman as there are a couple scenes where he throws Zod through dozens of buildings and the film doesn't really tell you if those buildings where abandoned or not so he may or may not have cause some deaths.

Overall the film is a 4/5.
