Review of Man of Steel (2013) by Shane S — 17 Apr 2016
An average addition to the comic book universe of cinema. Henry Cavill is a decent superman trapped in a movie lacking an identity. The DC cannon is trying hard to cash in on the darker macabre feel of its most successful entry, the Dark Knight trilogy.
The gritty comic reboot is not always the ticket to success, as can be seen in this film. The action scenes are well orchestrated and engaging, but the film lacks heft or emotional investment. There is jarring lack of proper pacing that invariably stems from the relentless attempt to be gritty and more somber.
Man of Steel delivers all the spectacle of superman, but none of his heart. The excellent Michael Shannon also feels wasted in a weakly built and poorly scripted character.
