Review of Man of Steel (2013) by Jeremy C — 03 Jul 2016
I like the film. However, I feel they brought a darkness to the Superman character. I like complexity in characters, but this is Superman we are talking about. He is the least conflicted character in all of pop culture.
He's a boy from Kansas, who grew up on a farm. He gets all his answers from the information his father provides him with in his craft from krypton. I don't like this search for identity they have him go on, only to luckily stumble across an aircraft discovered by the military? Eh, I don't like the change.
Also, the aesthetic on krypton? I don't like it...riding on the back of flying dinosaurs? Nope. Living in these cave-like dwellings, like they are holding on to a primitive way of life? Nope. Not a fan of that at all.
I'm not a fan of the casting of Lois either. But Cavill makes a good superman. I like Crowe as Supermans dad, and Shannon is a great Zod. The action sequences are great! The suit looks great! I'm just glad Superman is back.
A little more of the traditional would've been better to me though. I wish they would enhance the quality of these characters, without completely changing them as they seem to enjoy doing. Not every wheel needs to be reinvented.
..just smooth it out, make it with better material, but stay true to the initial invention. Idk. That's my feeling.
