Review of Man of Steel (2013) by J Z — 10 Jun 2017
As the first of many DCEU films to come, Man of Steel is a great origin story and a proper, well-executed development and creation of DC's classic, best-known, superhero.
While it's not the superman movie we expected in an atmospheric sense, it's probably even better than what we'd ever hoped for. Zack Snyder's moody and garish direction impacts the overall theme of the film immensely, especially in the way it complements the characterization of Superman himself, and his rather dark past. The movie is deep, therefore it's not going to try to be unrealistic and happy for almost no reason, because it's actually trying to depict what it'd be like for someone to be alienated from their true culture and have no sense of who they are or what to do with their societal differences.
This is a movie about coming of age and finding who you are. It's not just about superman defending the planet from aliens. In fact, it's abut both of these things. A simple combination of the two really adds to the film as a whole. This is not just a generic superhero action film, it has the potential to influence young people's lives entirely.
Aside from that, Man of Steel is a beautifully shot film. It has generally great performances, a well-established cast of characters, a reasonable conflict, amazing action sequences, and a couple of great inspirational themes and morals behind its design.
Overall, Man of Steel has many great themes of self-acceptance and becoming a person that you're proud to be, which is the most anyone can ask for from any film, not to mention a blockbuster action film starring superman.
