Review of Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again (2018) by Colleenm3 — 12 Sep 2021
Cult followers of the original Mamma Mia were not disappointed as the sequel, Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again, was released ten years past the original release data. Living up to the original lively motion picture was nothing short of a challenge. With the long-awaited anticipation built up, there were many fans looking forward to a strong second act. In this movie, it follows the mother Donna, originally played by Meryl Streep in the first Mamma Mia, and her life previous to her daughter Sophie(Amanda Seyfried). In the second film, young Donna is played by Lily James. It is also intertwined with her daughter’s later life and how she honors her late mother’s life’s passions of opening a resort. Casting for the second movie was done well. Hiring and incorporating the same actors helps to keep the name and originality of the first movie along with making it seem more credible, not like a ripped off remake. The story was well created, clever, and helps paint a picture of what fans originally had to imagine.
Long awaited sequels to movies that were big hits on the screens years ago can be a difficult task to complete while carrying out the same enthusiasm. The use of vibrant colors throughout the film added to the life of the story. The cast and costumes were fun and eye catching, and the music from the well-known ABBA was performed in once again memorable way. Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again was an excellent twist that added to the original movie.
These movies leave the audience satisfied and touched by the emotions portrayed by the cast. Adding some surprises, like the death of Donna in Mamma Mia 2, made the, what could’ve been predictable movie, shocking to audiences at first view. Not all took this unexpected occurrence enthusiastically and did add some unnecessarily extra detail to the plot. Some may have also thought there were parts to this movie dragged out a bit too far. Overall, this movie fulfilled the consumers want for a second and it continues to provide the lively musical productions in a sufficient way. Would recommend watching at least once, especially if a fan of the first film.
