Review of Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again (2018) by Jacob B — 25 Aug 2018
I'm not going to go act like Mamma Mia 2 has problems. I found Cher, an actual singer, to have a bad singing voice, the movie has pacing issues and one of the genuinely likable characters from the first film, Meryl Streep is dead.
Yet the sequel fixes the flaws the first film had. Mainly by not attempting to appeal to both fans of the musical and regular moviegoers at the same time and not singing songs just for the sake of singing them.
Except for Fernando. Good thing Andy Garcia's character's first name just happened to be Fernando so that we can listen to Cher sing. And people complained that Pierce Brosnan sounded like a drunk David Bowie fan in the first film.
The songs are a lot of fun, the comedic timing is much better and Lily James' performance is the best thing about the movie. Good casting choices for the 1979-set scenes. They all look like young versions of their 21st-century counterparts.
Here We Go Again is all about Narm Charm. And what's so wrong with that?
