Review of Mama (2013) by Lucas R — 17 Jul 2013
Apparently this was Guillermo del Toro week for me, as this is the second film by the director I watched in a span of 48 hours. Having little to go off for the film other than the director's pedigree, I was curious.
My curiosity was rewarded, as Mama is pleasantly good. Mama has the distinctive fairy tale feeling that G.d.T. injects into his films, with beautiful camera work, splendid color manipulation, and interesting characters.
But, now for the real question. Is it scary? Yes! It may play off the "approach the creepy figure from behind, turn around and BOO!" angle just a little too much, but Mama is scary in all the right places.
As with Pacific Rim, it may not break conventions, but if you like paranormal horror, then give Mama a shot, she might surprise you :).
