Review of Mama (2013) by Josh A — 20 Jul 2013
The story doesn't really allow for Del Toro to totally play to one of his major strengths: the creation of very interesting fantasy characters/environments. This is more of an old-school, slow burn, straightforward horror film, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it also isn't breaching any new territory either.
It is dark, disturbing, and bizarre enough that it almost stops making sense. It's a mixed bag.
