Review of Mama (2013) by Latrice L — 18 Sep 2013
I remember passing this up at the theater 'cause the poster made it look pretty terrible. I wish I hadn't have been so overly judgmental because I REALLY enjoyed Mama. Seriously! Even the weird but beautifully enchanting ending that got me shouting at the screen.
I very much liked Jessica Chastain here and her character as she grew. I thought the ghost, Mama, was particularly freakin' creepy at times, the way she moaned and how her bones cracked as she walked down the walls etc, but other times when her full appearance was shown she just looked like a black potato with a dress and I think that made it less horrific and more kids fantasy.
Mama is definitely quite unique in terms of the offerings from mainstream horror, and doesn't seem to spend its budget on creaking door sound FX either. I'm happy to see this and Annabel had a freakin' Misfits shirt, so what can I say?
