Review of Mama (2013) by Jc E — 13 Aug 2013
Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty) ruled the box office in January with this film and her Oscar-nominated film, 'Zero Dark Thirty'). However, her roles in both couldn't be more different, which shows what range she has as an actress.
It's unusual to see someone of her acting caliper in a horror film, but this one has Guillermo del Toro's fingerprints on it, so that gives it a little credence. The story is pretty tried-and-true, but it's still enthralling.
The creepy kid factor is amped to 11 with Isabelle Nelisse. Nikolaj Coster-Waldau ("Game of Thrones") steps out from his fantasy role and does a respectable job in his first starring cinematic role.
The film isn't truly memorable, nor does it have anything that is refreshing, but there are much worse, more poorly acted horror films out there. If you enjoyed the other pictures that del Toro has presented, like 'The Orphanage' or 'Don't Be Afraid of the Dark', you'll probably enjoy this one too.
