Mama has some creepy imagery with old school scares and an OK, yet occasionally shallow performance from talented Jessica Chastain. It's characters, particularly Chastain's, are hollow and underused.
It had potential, but while it is preferable to have Del Toro direct this himself, Mama is nonetheless a tired, bottomless disappointment.
