The story is about a mother of two daughters who is killed by their father. When he commits suicide, the two daughters, Victoria and Lilly are stranded in a suburban house for five years and they create an imaginary friend named Mama.

When their uncle Lucas who is their father's brother played by Nikolaj Coster-Waldau brings them home to stay at his house along with his girlfriend Annabel played by Jessica Chastain, they realise that they are not alone as Mama has followed them into their house.

They find out that Mama is actually Victoria and Lilly's dead mother who has come back as a spirit played by Javier Botet and wants her daughter back as she once tried to suicide with Lilly as a baby but she died and Lilly survived hanging on a branch as they fell off a cliff.

They find out that Mama is going to recreate her death again one night with Victoria and Lilly both on the same cliff. Victoria chooses to stay but Lilly says farewell to Lucas and Annabel and she dies.

This movie is perfect for anyone who is into old-fashioned scares and despises cheap gore. It has a strong plot, reminding us of the classic ghost movies. The acting is believable especially from Jessica Chastain who only became famous just a couple of years ago.

the two girls as Victoria and Lilly gave in stromg performances, Javier Botet as the title character was amazingly scary and Nikolaj as Lucas who I never heard of was pretty decent. While the script suffers from confusing twists, Mama gets a 9.

6/10.
