Review of Mallrats (1995) by Michael C — 25 Jun 2012
This is a movie I can see why it wasn't respected when it came out. But just like 90's counterpart Fight Club, I look back (as I think many do) at Mallrats and see one of the best comedies of the 90s.
Kevin Smiths "universe movies" (Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma etc.) are all really really good films, even if his other stuff isn't. And my personal favorite of these is Mallrats.
It is more laugh out loud funny in my opinion then the other staple point Clerks, and balances that humor with a really solid story, though not clear at first, the real story is the change in Brodie and how he really in a way grows up.
Speaking of Brodie the number one reason this movie is as good as it is, Jason Lee. A gem of the 90's and now who never really gets enough respect he is unbelievable in Mallrats. He is hilarious in the way that he delivers his lines and acts to an extremely high level considering it was his very first major film role.
As with Smiths other movies its interesting seeing how these characters fit into his universe which is always a fun part of watching his movies. All in all I believe this is probably my favorite comedy movie of the 1990s and a highly under-appreciated one at that.
If you really haven't seen it I recommend it to everyone out there. It may be a little nerdy and I realize that it's not going to be for everyone, but I think everyone has to give it a shot, I think they'll be surprised just how good it is.
