Review of Mallrats (1995) by Bill M — 23 Feb 2014
Easily Smiths weakest viewaskewniverse movie, a lazy as hell Clerks follow up that announced that maybe this dude wasnt another Tarantino after all, there are many a problem with Mallrats, it's aforementioned laziness for start, it just coasts off Clerks really, it also lacks that movies indie rawness and smarts.
Other problems are frankly how flat and uninspired the movies production values are and overall filmaking is, sometimes it feels strangely like an even more amateur film than Smiths debut despite being bigger and slicker, plus a sense of smugness about the whole thing thats hard to shake off, and it doesn't help that the two lead characters who we're meant to relate to are a pair of unlikable, selfish dicks when they are supposed to be likable, underdog slackers who we should be rooting for, T.
S and Brodie frankly dont deserve their girlfriends back, (also their girlfriends, especially distractinglywonky eyed Shannon Doherty are a pair of bitches too which doesn't help) so the whole plot and outcome of the film for these characters is hard to invest in.
Still it's very funny truth be told, Jay and Silent Bob once again save the movie, and it's a good watch with friends. But the more I watch the film, the more unbearable I find Jason Lee! which is odd considering how much I used to love the dude.
