Review of Mallrats (1995) by Jj J — 03 Feb 2010
There's not a lot going on plot-wise (two recently dumped friends hang out at the mall, try to win the girls back) but that's not what Kevin Smith's Clerks follow-up is all about. Instead make way for over the top characters, ridiculous situations and endless gags ranging from pratfalls to Smith's usual assortment of comic book and Star Wars geek humour.
Jason Lee steals the show as loudmouth layabout Brodie and there are too many laughs to mention - Willam and the sailboat, pretty much everything involving mischief makers for hire Jay & Silent Bob.
.. Sure there are a bunch of jokes that we could have done without (Ivannah the topless psychic, the "stinkpalm"...) but they're firmly in the minority. Even the actual plot - Jason Lee and mini-Brendan Fraser Jeremy London's attempts to win back their ex's - is well done, you certainly want them to prevail.
An entertaining comedy all-around.
