Review of Mallrats (1995) by Toad T — 06 Mar 2013
Most people dub this movie as one of Kevin Smith's missteps. I'm just going to say it: I like "Mallrats" better than "Clerks." Clerks had some funny scenes, but it is so obviously made and acted by amateurs.
Jason Lee is the real driving force as Brodie. I find Brodie much more funny than Randall, plus there's no scene where Brodie is obviously reading his lines from a newspaper like Randall did in "Clerks.
" Yes, Jeremy London is totally unmemorable, but Lee is funny enough that London's bad performance is just an afterthought. There's a reason Jason Lee has been used in so many Smith films after Mallrats, because Lee delivers Smith's writing like no other.
Well, Jason Mewes is also pretty damn good as Jay. Overall, I think "Mallrats" is underrated.
