Review of Malena (2000) by Paul N — 26 Sep 2007
A beautiful film, whimsical, heartfelt, light and comedic, but with a growing sense of inevitable tragedy. Bellucci is stunning in a virtually silent role; saying all she needs to with her body and eyes, bearing the weight of her small town's envy, lust, spite and endless gossip with elegant but fragile poise.
A little brief and ineffectual, perhaps, but a decent paean to unrequited lust and love and a believable portrait of a woman crushed by the desires of the society she inhabits.
