Review of Malena (2000) by Dan D — 28 Oct 2008
Exceptionally beautiful but totally misunderstood. Monica Bellucci is Malena, the humanization of both pre-war and post-war Italy as seen through a teenager's eyes. Her life unfolds dramatically in a picturesque Sicilian backdrop, coinciding with Italy's own experiences as a nation at war.
Once you hear the soundtrack it will haunt you forever. It is the perfect aural representation of the protagonist's struggle, beauty, and melancholia that summarizes the whole essence of the film.
