Review of Malena (2000) by Jennie R — 31 Aug 2011
This movie was not set up in a way that made me relate or care about these characters. Renato's secret adoration of this women drew me right into the film but I felt left there in the middle. Malena never gets developed as a character and so her terrible treatment doesn't create the emotional tie in as it should (in my humble opinion).
Towards the end, Renato states that he learned courage from Malena but the movie fails to show him do anything courageous. He seems like a pitiful coward. What I did love about this film was the depiction of the village against Malena.
Her only crime to them was her beauty. It really seemed symbolic of how beautiful women are vilified and condemned. Instead of accepting beauty, we strive to destroy it or stand on it to make ourselves feel better about ourselves.
