"Sleeping Beauty" established Maleficent as the ultimate Disney villain--one that is vengeful, terrific, and who becomes a dragon. "Maleficent" essentially turns Maleficent into the hero and makes the king the villain.
The attempts to defy fairytale cliches in "Maleficent" ultimately serve to make sleeping beauty more pedestrian than it ever was. Nevertheless, "Maleficent" was visually exciting.
