Review of Maleficent (2014) by Jamey D — 30 May 2015
I can forgive the "misunderstood villainess" angle. I can forgive having that whole relationship with King Stefan and him becoming a villain. I can forgive the Maleficent/Aurora relationship even though it's a copy of the Elsa/Anna relationship from Frozen. Heck, I can even forgive the three "good" fairies taking several levels in idiocy and blandness. But I CAN'T forgive Maleficent turning her pet raven into the dragon instead of taking that iconic form herself. That moment, where she doesn't "bring up all the powers of Hell" and turn into her dragon form is what we call "nuking the fridge", which, of course, is jumping the shark for movies. Thanks, Crystal Skull.
In the words of a line immortalized in the documentary "Waking Sleeping Beauty," "it didn't work at all.".
