Review of Maleficent (2014) by Pdub O — 05 Jan 2017
I have to admit, I did not originally go to the theater to see 'Maleficent.' But, when it was released digitally, I bought the movie on the strength of the extras and the "making of" mini-video that talked about Miss Jolie and the character.
I have to say it, and I'm a 53 year old guy---but this movie is BRILLIANT. It is so beautifully shot, the actors are absolutely stunning. There is truly nothing I could say negatively about any of the performances--although I did think that the depth of paranoia that Stefan's character underwent was a bit much.
I mean, for 16 years did he sit in a room and look at her wings? Kind of creepy. But hey, Angelina was pure force of talent and ability and she MADE this movie. I know that Joe Roth had always said in the trades that there wasn't ANYONE who could have played that character.
And boy. he was right. A person might want to discount the performance because this is a "Disney Kids" movie---but she was so- spot-on---I just can't put into words how impressive she was.
I have an illness that keeps me home pretty often. And since I bought the movie----I watch it every 3 or 4 days. It makes me laugh and cry and I am such an appreciative viewer because it takes an actress---a GREAT actress---to play that role.
In the scene where she awakens to find her wings gone---the angst and sadness that she bellowed was simply awesome. You could tell she was in agony. I give this movie a solid "A". I would recommend this movie to EVERYONE! Excellent script by Linda Woolverton, by the way.
