Review of Malcolm X (1992) by Rachel F — 09 Sep 2009
In a society were Martin Luther King is given the credit of single-handedly leading the Civil Rights movement, Malcolm X shakes up every pre-conception we in White America have of Dr. King as primary mover and shaker.
Malcolm X shows us another side; the story of a man who went from convict to prisoner to revolutionary, educating himself while incarcerated and being transformed by God into a leader like no other.
Having educated myself in alot of things, I cant help but to identify with Malcolm. In Malcolm, I see myself; his anger becomes my anger, his discontent is my discontent. All militant yet remaining in a highly spiritual/theological context.
Today there remains a great deal of misunderstanding about, ignorance of, and even hostility toward Muslims here in America. This film brings to light that one of our great shining examples of justice in the Unites States was himself Muslim. Malcolm cannot be understood without Islam and the Civil Rights era cannot be truly understood without Malcolm.
I consider him a hero, a teacher, and an example that I believe this country would be better off following.
