Review of Malcolm X (1992) by Johnathon W — 01 Dec 2013
Brilliant biopic that represents the career best of Denzel Washington & Spike Lee. Washington transforms into Malcolm X, not only capturing his look & mannerisms but his brilliant speech-making ability, that even in his most racist moments, you can't help but be transfixed by what he's saying.
He receives plenty of support from the rest of the cast, but is only matched by Al Freeman Jr., who portrayal of Elijah Muhammad is uncanny. Lee gives the story the epic delivery it deserves (the opening scene alone tells you're in for a big film) and while he veers close to being overly political (particularly the opening & closing scenes) he doesn't shy away from showing Malcolm's many faults, from his criminal past to his blind devotion to the Nation of Islam.
A true classic & one of the best bio pictures ever made.
