Review of Malcolm X (1992) by Dan B — 25 Mar 2008
Well made, thought provoking and with an immense performance from Denzel Washington. My only problem is that it seems I'm expected to completely revere Malcolm, while he was certainly brave and well intentioned (at least after leaving the Nation of Islam) he didn't actually seem to achieve that much.
It was only very late in his life that he began to preach a doctrine of genuine worth, prior to this he had first been a serious criminal and then reformed to a devout racist and campaigner for racial segregation.
Martin Luther King gets my vote. One other point; I found the kids and Mandela finale a little unnecessary, it actually detracted from the power of the ending for me.
