Review of Making the Grade (1984) by Hunter D — 24 May 2009
MAKING THE GRADE is a really lame high-concept comedy that was shot at Rhodes College (my alma mater) back in 1985 before Memphis even had a film commission. The production design in this movie is atrocious, filled with cheap sets that shake whenever something bumps against a wall.
It's easy to see why Rhodes was so pissed over this movie, the film makes the school look like a really cheap, crappy prep school. I know the film doesn't depict it as Rhodes (they call it Hoover Academy in the movie), but still, it makes the school look really lame.
The movie is mostly laugh free, save for the scenes with Dana Olsen, who is actually pretty funny and saves the movie from being completely unwatchable (hence two stars instead of one). The end credits announce that the two main characters, Palmer (Dana Olsen) and Eddie (Judd Nelson, who sleepwalks through the role) will return in a movie called TOURISTA.
We're still waiting on that one.
