Review of Make Way for Tomorrow (1937) by Mike M — 18 Jun 2011
The first maybe 50 minutes of this movie feels like a pretty good play, the actors are robotic and the dialogue is sort of ehh. However as the movie progresses the acting gets much better. I am not crazy about the story apparently everyone in the family hated each other and it really takes until the end of the movie for the kids to realize, wow we're kind of assholes.
Sure the story is sad and I admire the fact that the director did not go for the typical happily ever after ending and I like the fact that he left it open to interpretation but the story is just not executed well with the exception of the last twenty minutes.
When I watch movies from this period of time the really good ones make me feel like I am there but this one I was very aware that I was watching a movie I was not interested for most of the middle in fact I was so bored I just wanted it to end the story is not interesting to me.
Make Way For Tomorrow does not start well at all however it finishes very well.
