Review of Major League (1989) by Douglas M — 30 May 2008
A great Cinderella story, told with much humor and memorable characters. The last act - a single game playoff with the Yankees with a trip to the playoffs on the line - evokes everything that's great about baseball. The final play - rendered in slow motion - is one of the great sports plays ever put on film. As they celebrate, it seems so real. I get goose bumps every time I see it.
Charlie Sheen is terrific as Wild Thing. Tom Berenger shines as an aging catcher with one last shot at glory and winning back the girl he lost years ago (Rene Russo!). James Gammon is pitch perfect as the manager. Wesley Snipes is great as base stealer Willie Mays Hayes. Bob Uecker as the announcer, Harry Doyle. A terrific cast in a classic underdog story.
