Review of Magnum Force (1973) by Tom F — 20 May 2008
Sequels are usually bad or awful, I always really liked this one. It might have something to do with the fact that I'm a massive Eastwood fan and would happily watch again any film he's been in.
Yes I include Pink Cadillac in that!. In this one, Harry Callahan is on the trail of some vigilante cops who are cleaning up the town in the way they see fit ie: killing off drug dealers etc execution style.
The film makers sensibly distance Callahan's character from the values that seemed to be being encouraged in the first film, basically vigilantism, thus making him a more complex and interesting character which would be explored more in the next 3 films.
In this one Callahan tells his would be comrades: 'I'm afraid you've misjudged me'. Eastwood always does quiet brooding well...some would argue that's all he can do. His success as a director shows he's much more than a one trick pony.
This film is probably not for everyone, but if you enjoy a bit of an action shoot 'em up with some good set pieces and a few classic 'dirty harry' speeches then this is it. Classic 70's cop movie, powjung! powjung! the sound of a .
44 Magnum!
