Review of Magnum Force (1973) by Solomon F — 13 Jan 2010
Dull and uninspired compared to the original. Also lacking is its predecessor's cool sense of style and economy. The appeal of the first film lies much in its approach of applying a modern day coat of paint over what is essentially a western (more specifically, a Sergio Leone western).
The deviation from that formula has not paid off for Magnum Force. Though the concept of killer-rookie-traffic-cops is appealing, the film is poorly paced/ sluggish and the there is too much screen time dedicated to throwaway characters.
Harry is almost a completely different person in terms of attitude and flair(also, he talks too much). Harry Callahan is still a badass, but nowhere near the exciting degree that he was before. The chain of climatic action sequences are the only reasons you will want to see this film.
