Review of Magnolia (1999) by Quinn B — 10 May 2011
Paul Thomas Anderson has made another brilliant film. My first PT Anderson movie I watched was Boogie Nights, which is amazing. Magnolia definitely didn't dissapoint. The characters in it are so depressed and you can't help but feel for them. The acting was tremendous, especially Tom Cruise. I mean he definitely deserved the Golden Globe that he won. John C Reilly also gave one of his best performances, and the kid that played the boy genius really did an amazing job.
Magnolia follows the story of several lives. There is a man behind a shell, Frank Mackey A man dying, who has plenty regrets, Earl Partridge, and his wife with many secrets, Linda Partridge. The nurse looking after Earl, Phil. An officer who wants nothing more than to shine, Officer Jim. A heroin addict, Claudia. A gave show host, Jimmy Gator. A boy genius, Stanley Spector. And a man whose life is a roller coaster of emotion, Donnie Smith. And by the end you will get this mess of characters.
Although Magnolia is an amazing film, and is really one of a kind. Boogie does remain my favourite PT Anderson film. With saying that tho, Magnolia is tremendous.
My favourite as I said before was Frank Mackey(Cruise). Although he is very vulgar at time, by the end, you can't help but feel for the guy. Another stand out was John C Reilly's character(Officer Jim). He plays his role so well, and is another character you feel for, as an unwanted cop.
Magnolia runs just past 3 hours, literally like 3 hours and 1 minute. The time went by so fast. I usually hate watching amazing movies for past 2 hours. But a couple I like, and this is one of them. There was not really any dull moments.
My rating for Magnolia is.
100%.
