Review of Magnolia (1999) by Ulbrecht T — 03 Sep 2011
I love this, but I'd love it more if it wasn't obvious how hard he was trying to create a masterpiece out of it. (He ended up doing that with There Will Be Blood). I guess I think he might've been trying a little too hard on this one, and by doing so makes it's artsiness and wit seem a bit forced (kinda the way I feel the complexity in Inception is forced), instead of being a natural counter-part to a good story.
Despite this, Anderson's ambition still results in quite a mind-fuck of a film, one that I'll always love.
