Review of Magic Mike (2012) by Berthina K — 17 Feb 2013
Well I finally did it, rented Magic Mike. I'm a huge Steven Soderbergh fan and have wanted to see this movie, but considering it's about male strippers, it took a while before I got the cahones to see it.
First, it really reminds me of another movie that goes deep into a another seedy world and that's Boogie Nights. On the surface, it seems like these guys have it all. Money, girls, large weiners to name a few, but as the film goes more in depth (insert crude joke here), you get the sense that it's a not all that great life.
Channing Tatum is really developing his acting skills and can carry a movie. He's totally believable as the 'I want to do something more with my life after stripping' character. His boss Matthew McConaughey has got his part down like he's been a long time stripper himself.
Anyone that has a kid considering this lifestyle should make this watch this movie. Society really doesn't accept these people accept in the confines of the stage area. Beyond that they really have to live in their own world.
