Review of Magic Mike (2012) by Sandy K — 27 Feb 2013
Maybe it's because the story's inspiration came from Channing Tatum's real-life experience as a male stripper, but he shows more depth as an actor (not to mention some pretty amazing dance moves) than in any other acting I've seen from him thus far.
His character shows subtlety and growth, as he gradually realizes that his success at the strip club is undermining his real dreams. Matthew McConaughey deserved his Oscar nomination for best supporting actor -- he is riveting as the driven strip club manager.
Couldn't help thinking that this film shows that objectifying people as sex objects (regardless of gender) is ultimately dehumanizing, and that perhaps men watching it will realize that in a way would be lost on them in a film about female strippers.
